Last weekend, a unique Yangshuo Climbing Festival was held on the bustling West Street of Yangshuo, Guangxi. Through various activities such as obstacle courses and bouldering competitions, the continuous stream of tourists in Yangshuo experienced the charm of climbing. This was also the largest climbing-themed event held in China since the International Olympic Committee announced on August 4, Beijing time, that competitive climbing would be included in the Olympics.
The 6th Kailas Yangshuo Climbing Festival kicked off at 9:00 AM on August 13, 2016, on West Street in Yangshuo. This annual grand gathering attracts climbing enthusiasts from all over the world. This year, the event drew thousands of climbing enthusiasts from around the globe to experience it firsthand.
Unlike previous climbing festivals, this event, jointly promoted by the organizers and the Yangshuo County Government, invited international route setters, national champions, and several veteran climbers who have been promoting climbing in Yangshuo since the early 1990s. They shared their climbing experiences over the past twenty years and discussed the development and changes that have made Yangshuo a globally renowned climbing destination. The organizers awarded certificates of honor and the latest climbing equipment to individuals and groups who have made outstanding contributions to climbing in Yangshuo. They also looked forward to the bright future of climbing as it joins the Olympic family. For the first time, the Yangshuo Climbing Festival also launched a 48-hour non-stop climbing party this summer, aiming to get more people involved in and enjoy climbing.
Challenging and thrilling climbing projects
This year's Kailas Yangshuo Climbing Festival was richer than ever before. The most exciting events included the night bouldering competition, natural rock wall climbing, mud battles, double river crossing, and zip-lining across the river. There was also a unique night climbing project that continued the excitement of the day, exploring the unknown in the dark. Reporters were amazed to see a group of young boys and girls challenging themselves on the natural rock wall at Jiuping Mountain, relying on a safety rope and a pair of climbing shoes to climb and maneuver until they reached the top, with the youngest being only six years old.
Unlike regular climbing projects, deep-water soloing is set on an abandoned arch bridge where climbers freely climb without any safety protection equipment. After reaching their limit, they leap into the water, feeling the thrill of the dive. This is the challenge and excitement that deep-water soloing enthusiasts seek.
To allow more ordinary people to experience the charm of climbing, many entry-level climbing routes were set up. In interviews on-site, many people expressed that they used to think climbing was a game for a few, but they were surprised to find that they could complete it and enjoy it.
Looking forward to seeing them at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics
In the early hours of August 4, Beijing time, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the International Olympic Committee Executive Board announced that competitive climbing would become an official event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Like running and swimming, climbing is one of the most basic human physical abilities. Climbing can directly express the Olympic spirit of higher, faster, and stronger. There are currently no climbing events in the existing Olympic competitions, nor are there any vertical surface competitions. The inclusion of climbing will make the Olympics more diverse!
Climbing in China is developing rapidly and is becoming increasingly popular among young people. For example, this year's 2016 Kailas Yangshuo Climbing Festival has attracted tens of thousands of climbing enthusiasts. Kailas will continue to host various climbing events, aiming to contribute more climbing talent to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
The picturesque Yangshuo, with thousands of climbing participants and various passionate and challenging climbing events, is hard to imagine without being there. The excitement and heat brought by this climbing festival, as well as the grandeur and charm of China's largest climbing festival, are beyond imagination.
