unboxing uvex SGL203 outdoor sports glasses

As a professional brand capable of providing complete head-to-toe safety protection, uvex has always been dedicated to the fields of sports protection and industrial protection. My impression of uvex includes winter skiing helmets and goggles, as well as industrial protective masks, indicating that the brand covers a wide range of areas.

Speaking of sports protection, uvex, which started with UV protection (uvex can be seen as a combination of UV = Ultra Violet and ex = Excluded), has continued to use the brand name to this day. In the sports field, it has also sponsored many professional athletes, such as Karl Platt, who broke the Tour de France record five times, and numerous skiing athletes who trust uvex products.

Before we start the unboxing, allow me to provide a brief introduction about ultraviolet rays.Ultraviolet rays are radiation with wavelengths between 10nm and 400nm, which are invisible to the naked eye. Just because you can't see them doesn't mean they don't exist; even on cloudy days, 80% of ultraviolet rays are still present. The damage caused by ultraviolet rays includes melanin deposition, skin cancer, and potential harm to the eyes, such as cataracts and retinal damage. Therefore, preventing ultraviolet rays is crucial during outdoor sports and activities.

Back to the main topic, let's continue with the unboxing. Today, I received the SGL203, an entry-level sports eyewear that offers 100% UV protection. This model comes in four colors, three of which are S3 specifications, and one is S1. I got the matte black-green S3 and the black-yellow S1.

At this point, some people might have questions, what is the difference between S1 and S3?In a nutshell, they represent different levels of light transmission. Specifically, uvex classifies lenses into four levels based on their light transmission rates: S0-S3.

This allows us to wear glasses with different light transmission rates according to different weather conditions.

To be more specific, S1 glasses are more suitable for cloudy days or evenings when the light is not very strong, while S3 glasses are better for sunny days. For nighttime, S0 glasses are needed, although most sunglasses don't come in S0 because UV rays are minimal at night, making them unnecessary. S0 is more commonly used in ski goggles, for example, for those who enjoy night skiing due to the reflective nature of snow. I won't go into more detail here; if I get ski goggles in the future, I'll provide a detailed introduction.

Unboxing Section

Let's jump back to our unboxing. Apologies for my somewhat erratic review.

Upon receiving the two pairs of glasses, I noticed the packaging was quite thoughtful, with plastic film protecting the outer packaging, an additional glasses case, and a hook that can be attached to the car (the hook can be used separately).

The back of the box lists the model, color, material, and light transmission rate of the glasses.

The bottom of the box lists the precautions. If you're good at English, you can translate it (proudly, I understood it using Baidu).

Upon opening, it was simpler than I expected: a paper stand to secure the glasses, an instruction manual attached to the glasses, and a soft cloth drawstring pouch. However, for sports enthusiasts, simplicity and practicality are key.

Both pairs have polycarbonate (PC) lenses that offer 100% UV protection. The difference lies in the lens color coating, making them suitable for different environments.

Speaking of lens material, polycarbonate is a high-strength, impact-resistant, high-temperature-resistant engineering plastic, widely used in safety protection, such as bank security windows and bulletproof glass. It's also used in phones; for example, the back cover of the iPhone 5c is made of this material (rumor has it that the iPhone 8 will also use this plastic back cover, to be confirmed). Therefore, when choosing sports lenses, it's crucial to select flexible materials and verify the lens's flexibility before use, as this is vital during sports. This model is said to have passed impact resistance tests (able to withstand a 6mm steel ball impact at 162 km/h), which I hope to verify in future reviews.

This pair of glasses can block 100% of UV rays, effectively shielding against near ultraviolet (UVA), far ultraviolet (UVB), and ultra-short ultraviolet (UVC) rays. Different types of UV rays cause different skin damage.Short-wave UVC is the most harmful but is usually absorbed by the ozone layer. However, industrial pollution has damaged the ozone layer, so it still occurs; medium-wave UVB causes photodamage, sunburn (redness stage), and prolonged exposure can lead to erythema, inflammation, skin aging, and severe cases can cause skin cancer; long-wave UVA has strong penetration, causing melanin production (tanning stage), and although it doesn't cause skin inflammation, it leads to aging and damage. The nose pads are made of silicone, which feels comfortable to touch, and there is no discomfort during initial wear; however, they are not detachable.

The temples are designed with two ends: one end is made of hard resin material, and the other side is soft silicone like the nose pads. The overall flexibility of the temples is quite strong. This can be verified when taking out the glasses. To avoid damaging the paper stand, I first removed one temple and then the other.

The actual weight of the entire glasses is 23g, and they feel comfortable to wear. I will conduct tests in sports mode later.

Summary Section

From the initial unboxing, the entire uvex glasses packaging is simple, with flexible lenses and front and rear temples, making them quite safe. The silicone nose pads and rear temples are soft and comfortable, and the overall weight is controlled at 23g, making them almost weightless. The specifics will be verified in future reviews.
